Research Guidelines





Unit 3: PUSHING the LIMITS
Key concept: connections
Related concepts: convention and point of view
Objective: to gain background knowledge of groups or individuals who have pushed the limits personally or of a society culturally, linguistically, mentally, or physically. To reflect, analyze, evaluate, and predict the consequences of that group or individual and its effects on themselves and others.

Use the following headlines

  1. NAME OF GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL YOU ARE RESEARCHING:
  2. WHERE ARE THEY FROM? HOW OLD WERE THEY WHEN THEY PUSHED THE LIMITS?
  3. HOW DID THEY PUSH THE LIMITS?
  4. WHY DID THEY PUSH THE LIMITS?
  5. WHAT WAS THE IMMEDIATE EFFECTS OF THEIR ACTIONS?
  6. WHAT WAS THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF THEIR ACTIONS? WHAT DO YOU PREDICT WILL HAPPEN BECAUSE OF IT?
  7. DO CONSIDER HOW THEY PUSHED THE LIMITS. IS IT NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE FOR THEMSELVES AND THOSE AROUND THEM?
  8. WAS THERE ANOTHER WAY THEY COULD HAVE DONE WHAT THEY DID WITHOUT BREAKING OR STARTING NEW CONVENTIONS?
  9. HOW DOES WHAT THEY DID EFFECT YOU PERSONALLY OR THOSE AROUND YOU?
  10. HOW DOES THIS MAKE YOU FEEL?WHAT DO YOU THINK OR WONDER?
Criteria
Aim for this
Introduction of topic
Topic introduced clearly and in an interesting way. Purpose of talk was made clear. Outline of points was given.
Development of topic
A very good understanding of the topic shown. All sections were answered. Links and connections between ideas made clear. Information was relevant and well expressed in own words. Points were well-organised and developed with sufficient and appropriate details. The audience can follow the presentation.
Voice: clarity, pace, fluency
Presenter spoke clearly and at a good pace to ensure audience comprehension. Delivery was fluent and expressive.
Vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar
The vocabulary of the presentation was appropriate for the topic. A variety of phrases and sentence structures were used. The presentation content was grammatically correct. Connectors were used to link ideas.
Pronunciation
Pronunciation and intonation is correct and confident.
Use of visual aids
Visual aids e.g. chart or PowerPoint was carefully prepared and supported the presentation effectively. They clarified and reinforced the spoken message. The aids added impact and interest to the presentation.
Conclusion of topic
The presentation was summed up clearly and effectively, with key points emphasised.
Answering questions from audience
Questions answered with little difficulty. Very good knowledge of the topic was demonstrated. Language was correct and fluent.
